Lake District Cycling 2

It was Good Friday, sunny and warm, with enough gardening done to stem any feelings of guilt.

Primroses, wood anemonies and dandelions lined the hedgerows as I rode south down the lovely Lorton valley. Beyond the lush green of fields of lambs and their mothers, the hills of Lakeland stood green and grey against a blue sky.

The Lorton Valley

I stopped for the view at Lorton bridge, beautifully rebuilt with large sandstone blocks after having been washed away in the floods of 2009.

And then on south to one of the best views I know that has a cyclable road, and a bench. Crummock Water, Rannerdale Knotts, Haystacks, and in the distance, Great Gable. Beautiful.

For which, thank you to Crummock Water Holiday Cottages. Fantastic.

On towards Loweswater, and if I wasn’t thinking seriously about heading home for food, there could quite easily have been a stop for a pint of the own brewed beer in the garden of the Kirkstyle Inn, looking across to the hills.

But I headed back down the valley, up a short, sharp hill and into Low Lorton, with a reminder of just how far away London is:

Yes, a very, very precise 299 and 3/4 miles. Could be a lifetime away.
