Coast and Castles Cycle Route

There’s a new edition of the Coast and Castles (South) Cycle Route map. It’s a fantastic cycle route, running from Tyneside to Edinburgh, via Berwick-upon-Tweed at the England/Scotland border.

I’ve cycled south from Edinburgh to Berwick and north up the Northumbrian coast from Alnmouth to Berwick, enjoying both rides hugely.

Alnmouth

Through Northumbria, the route hugs the coast, taking in (of course) castles and great little towns: Alnwick and Bamburgh are wonderful.

Berwick deserves a good tour – especially the ramparts and below, the bridge:

And then there is the ride to Edinburgh. The traditional route is through (and over) the hills, and it is well worth it:

Of course, Edinburgh is fabulous. And from there, various routes head on north:

The new map is available at the Bike Ride Shop’s Coast and Castles page and the two rides are described in an ever-so-slightly light-hearted manner in The Full English and A Bit Scott-ish.
